Oral arguments, no conference this week

January 4, 2026

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the two cases — both death penalty appeals — on its January calendar.

The arguments will be live streamed, including the argument that one defense counsel unsuccessfully asked be closed to the public.  The opinion in People v. Deen should file by April 6, within the normal 90-day period.  A decision in the other case, People v. Bertsch and Hronis, might be delayed until April 30 because supplemental briefing will not be completed before the argument.

Because of the oral arguments, the court will not be conferencing this week and there will be a double conference next week.
