“Will [Justice Cuéllar] Be the First Mexican-American on the U.S. Supreme Court?”

September 23, 2019

Carly Stern profiles Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar for Ozy.  She calls him a “Swiss Army knife intellectual” with an “exquisitely constructed résumé,” but also says that “the spires overshadow a gritty foundation, one that makes Cuéllar a compelling [U.S. Supreme Court] choice for a future Democratic president.”

Cuéllar and other California Supreme Court justices have been the subject of U.S. Supreme Court speculation before.  (See here, here, and here.)

Only one California Supreme Court justice has graduated to the nation’s high court, and it’s been a while — President Lincoln nominated Stephen Field to the Court in 1863.
