Two new volumes of the Historical Society’s journal pay tribute to Justice Kathryn Werdegar

February 18, 2018

In yesterday’s mail were two volumes of California Legal History, the Journal of the California Supreme Court Historical Society.  [Disclosure:  I’m on the Society’s board of directors.]  The volumes are not yet, but likely soon will be, available here.

The 2017 volume is devoted to retired Justice Kathryn Werdegar.  It includes over a dozen tributes and two of Justice Werdegar’s unpublished speeches.  But the bulk of the book — over 400 pages — contains Justice Werdegar’s oral history.

The 2018 volume continues the Werdegar-tribute theme.  Mostly about environmental law, the book includes, among other writings, remarks Justice Werdegar gave about the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) at a 2010 conference and two articles about her environmental opinions.

The tributes come with Justice Werdegar’s vacant seat on the court still unfilled.  Today is Day 347 since she announced her retirement and the long vacancy has been causing problems.  (See here.)
