Governor Gavin Newsom has partially opened up records that he and then-Governor Jerry Brown submitted in support of six requests for the Supreme Court’s constitutionally required permission to grant clemency. The move comes after the First Amendment Coalition moved to unseal the records and the court denied Newsom’s attempts to keep confidential the entire clemency files. Motions by Newsom to seal clemency materials “in part” are pending. (See here, here, here, here, here, and here.)
