Eliseo Medina writes today in CalMatters, urging Governor Gavin Newsom to appoint Justice Goodwin Liu as California Attorney General if the current AG, Xavier Becerra, is confirmed as President Joe Biden’s Secretary of Health and Human Services. Medina, a former officer of the SEIU and UFW unions, says “there is no person better suited” than Justice Liu for the job that Medina says requires “someone who can hit the ground running in protecting California’s workers.”
Medina singles out Liu’s opinions for the court in Iskanian v. CLS Transportation of Los Angeles (see here), Gerawan Farming, Inc. v. Agricultural Labor Relations Board (see here, here, and here), and Troester v. Starbucks Corporation (see here).
Yesterday, attorney Virgil Roberts also wrote in favor of Liu’s appointment as Attorney General, extolling Liu as “a leading voice on issues of racial justice.”
Medina, Roberts, and Liu all serve together on the board of the James Irvine Foundation, an organization whose “goal is a California where all low-income workers have the power to advance economically.”
