reports for the Washington Post: “Democratic presidential contenders are coming under increased pressure from their base to take a page from Donald Trump’s 2016 playbook and release a shortlist of potential Supreme Court nominees — one part of a larger strategy from party activists to make the courts a central issue in the 2020 race.”
Demand Justice is part of the pressure. Stating its intent to “prod the candidates,” the group — organized to counter the current administration’s judicial appointees, who the group says are “overwhelmingly white men, unqualified for their posts” and who “consistently hold extreme, right-wing views” — released its own list of 32 potential Supreme Court justices. Three on the list currently serve on the California Supreme Court: Justices Goodwin Liu, Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, and Leondra Kruger. It’s not the first time those three have been mentioned for elevation.
