Politico reports that Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero and Justices Goodwin Liu, Leondra Kruger, Joshua Groban, and Kelli Evans attended Governor Gavin Newsom’s State of the State Address yesterday.

State Senator Tom Umberg, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, posted on Facebook a photo of him with the Chief Justice and Justices Kruger, Groban, and Evans and, I believe, Luis Céspedes, the Governor’s Judicial Appointments Secretary. Umberg wrote, “Another meaningful moment from today’s State of the State was having the honor to join the California Supreme Court Justices, a group that truly sets the bar high.”
Chief Justice Guerrero today issued a statement on the Governor’s budget proposal for the judicial branch. She said the proposal “includes much-needed investments to keep up with the rising costs of trial court operations, to increase funding for court-appointed appellate counsel representing indigent defendants, to reduce case backlogs and workload pressures in our appellate courts, and to advance critically needed new courthouse projects.” Merrill Balassone’s California Courts news release on the statement is here.
