Justice Liu to chair the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Board of Directors

April 5, 2023

Justice Goodwin Liu was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences four years ago. Now he’s been chosen as chair of the Academy’s board of directors.

Merrill Balassone’s news release for California Courts reports, “Founded in 1780 by John Adams, John Hancock, and others, the academy is one of the nation’s most prestigious honor societies that recognizes global leaders across diverse fields who are addressing societal challenges and advancing the public good.”

Former Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar was elected to the Academy in 2018.  Former Chief Justice Ronald George was inducted in 2009.

The news release also shows that Justice Liu is far from an underachiever: “He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the American Law Institute, and the American Philosophical Society. He also serves on the Council of the American Law Institute, on the Board of Directors of the James Irvine Foundation, and as president of the Yale University Council. He has previously served on the Board of Trustees of Stanford University, the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Science, Technology, and Law, the Board of Directors of the National Women’s Law Center, and the California Commission on Access to Justice.”
