Retired Justice Kathryn Werdegar will be a featured speaker at the California Lawyers Association annual meeting next month in San Diego. At the CLA Signature Luncheon, she will participate in the program, “Spotlight on the Supreme Court: A Conversation with Justice Kathryn Werdegar.” The program is described this way: “A lively interview with recently retired California Supreme Court Justice, Kathryn Mickle Werdegar, about her illustrious judicial career, life stories and perspectives on key issues facing practitioners and bench officers today.”
Despite the event description, Justice Werdegar’s retirement isn’t all that “recent,” and one of the things she might want to talk about is why Governor Jerry Brown has still not named her replacement even though she gave notice of her retirement almost six months before she left the court almost a year ago. It would also be interesting to hear Justice Werdegar’s views on the U.S. Supreme Court’s divided opinion in the travel-ban case, because she signed an amicus curiae brief that supported the unsuccessful challengers to the ban.
