February bar exam passing score lowered and no more California-written multiple choice bar exam questions

May 2, 2025

The February bar exam was a technical debacle. (See here.) Also, the California experiment in designing its own multiple choice questions instead of using the multistate bar examination questions wasn’t well received, especially after it was belatedly disclosed that some the California questions were drafted with the help of artificial intelligence. The Supreme Court took action today in response. Cheryl Miller reports on Twitter: “California’s Supreme Court lowers the raw score needed to pass the Feb 2025 bar exam, citing ‘the particular issues’ cited on the test. The justices additionally order the state bar to go back to the MBE for the July 2025 exam.” (See also her report for The Recorder.)
