Tomorrow morning, the Supreme Court will file its opinion in People v. Sandoval, an automatic appeal from a May 2003 judgment of death. Sandoval was argued on the court’s October calendar.
Speaking of the October calendar, after tomorrow there will still be three cases without opinions from those oral arguments. Because of the 90-day rule, opinions in those cases are due to be filed within the next 12 days. One of the three is Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association v. Padilla, which involves the Legislature’s authority to place a non-binding measure on the ballot seeking the electorate’s views on the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision. The California Supreme Court’s opinion will be a high-profile one that could affect relations between the state’s judicial and legislative branches.
