As noted here, the Supreme Court established the Committee on Judicial Ethics Opinions in 2011 to “to help inform the judiciary and the public concerning judicial ethics topics.”
Today the Committee issued a final opinion about whether a judicial officer may accept an invitation to attend a celebration for a for-profit law firm. In short, the answer is “no.” The committee advises judges not to accept such invitations, to ensure the law firm does not use the judge’s position to lend prestige to the law firm and to guard against the appearance of bias or impropriety.
