According to Cheryl Miller in The Recorder and Malcolm Maclachlan in the Daily Journal, California Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye has not decided yet if she wants to run for a second 12-year term on the Supreme Court.
During her annual meeting with reporters last week, the Chief Justice said she still needs to discuss with her husband whether to be on the ballot next year, but, according to The Recorder article, “she does ‘not see plans to do otherwise.’ ”
Cantil-Sakauye has said different things in the past about her future plans. Two years ago, she said she did intend to run again after months earlier having told a reporter that she hadn’t “made any long-term plans” and that she had “way more years than I need” to retire and to “walk away and do something else.” Last year, she said, “All options are on the table.”
As noted last month, if she does decide to run, Cantil-Sakauye would be one of a probable five Supreme Court justices standing for election in 2022.
