Chief Justice makes Court of Appeal administrative presiding justice appointment

January 17, 2018

It might be the Governor who appoints or nominates Court of Appeal justices and presiding justices, but it’s California’s Chief Justice who chooses an administrative presiding justice for those Courts of Appeal with more than one division (currently, the First, Second, and Fourth districts).  That’s one of those “extra” duties that the Chief Justice performs in addition to working on Supreme Court cases.  Exercising that power, Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye today designated Elwood Lui to be the Second District Court of Appeal’s administrative presiding justice.
