Helen Iris Torres’s op-ed in today’s Los Angeles Times says Governor Gavin Newsom has the chance to replicate what happened in 2009 when “President Obama made history by nominating Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court.” Torres, the chief executive of Hispanas Organized for Political Equality, says it would be appropriate to name the California Supreme Court’s first Latina justice to replace Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, who left the court almost two months ago.
Stating that “Latinas feel marginalized and underrepresented,” Torres writes, “Having a Latina justice would be a decisive step toward making the state Supreme Court truly representative of all Californians and help advance racial, ethnic and gender equity in the judicial system.”
