“Calif. Justice Pokes At Trump Admin, DOGE In Grad Speech”

May 13, 2025

Law360’s Bonnie Eslinger reports on Justice Goodwin Liu’s address yesterday at the UC Law San Francisco commencement. In the address, the article says, Justice Liu, “[w]ithout naming names, . . . took several swipes at the Trump administration.”

Liu used pointed humor (e.g., “I heard a rumor that some people don’t want judges wearing black robes anymore because black is woke”) and serious entreaties to criticize myriad actions taken by the federal government in the last several months.

Telling the new JDs that “your clients and our nation are counting on you,” Liu said that, although “this is a challenging time to become a lawyer, . . . there is also no better or more important time to be a lawyer.” “The principle that independence of the legal profession is vital to the fair and impartial administration of justice . . . is under threat today, and you must stand strong and defend it,” Liu instructed.

Justice Liu is scheduled to give another graduation speech, at the University of San Diego, this Saturday.
