“Associate Justice Joshua Groban Opens Up About His First 2 Years on California’s Supreme Court” [Updated]

October 3, 2020

The Recorder’s Cheryl Miller has this interview with Justice Joshua Groban.

Justice Groban talks about what it will be like to not be the junior member of the Supreme Court once Governor Gavin Newsom gets around to filling the vacancy created by Justice Ming Chin’s retirement (see here), how then-Governor Jerry Brown told him that he would be appointed, his surprise at finding many long-tenured court staff, his five chambers attorneys (three of the five, including his head of chambers, are women), his dissents from denials of review (“I think it is a very small and select group that’s looking at these votes”) (see here), remote oral arguments and court meetings, and the lowering of the bar exam passing score (see here).

What he doesn’t talk about is whether it was difficult for the justices to agree on the language of the court’s June statement condemning racism and the court’s decision to not retroactively apply the lowered bar exam passing score.  Commenting on those topics would “reveal . . . internal discussions” and “deliberations,” he says.

[Update:  Also in the interview, Justice Groban talks about the other Josh Groban (see here), who happens to live nearby.]
