A plea for the Governor to make a Supreme Court appointment

July 20, 2026

David Carrillo and Stephen Duvernay end their essay in Law.com with this ask for Governor Newsom, “Can we please have a new California Supreme Court justice?”  Their piece — titled “Can Governor Newsom appoint himself as the next SCOCA justice?” (spoiler alert:  they explain the answer is “no”) — is prompted by the over-eight-month-long vacancy on the court.

They also offer theories about reasons for the delay.
