Cal Fire Local 2881 v. California Public Employees’ Retirement System is a high-profile pension case. So, it’s not surprising that the court today filed 13 different amicus curiae briefs in the matter, representing over three dozen different amici.
There are two other big pension cases on the Supreme Court’s docket. Marin Association of Public Employees v. Marin County Employees’ Retirement Association is a grant-and-hold, uncommonly holding for a Court of Appeal case. That case — Alameda County Deputy Sheriff’s Association v. Alameda County Employees’ Retirement Association — was decided by the Court of Appeal earlier this year and a petition for review is presently pending before the Supreme Court. It’s a good bet that the court will grant the petition. What is less certain is whether Alameda County will be — and whether Marin Association will remain — a grant-and-hold, pending a decision in Cal Fire, or whether the court will order briefing in one or both of those cases.
