Job posting reminds that a practitioner’s Supreme Court audience includes more than the justices

March 24, 2018

The Supreme Court is looking to hire an attorney for its civil central staff. The notice of the opening provides a good reminder that it’s not just the justices who read our petitions for review and briefs. (See also here, here, and here.)

This is the central staff job description:

Supreme Court Attorney, Civil Central Staff (Level A – Senior) Duties: The candidate reviews, evaluates, and analyzes briefs, petitions, motions, and other pertinent documents filed in a particular case in order to determine factual accuracy, legal issues on review, and scope and complexity of issues raised. Reads and applies cases, statutes, constitutional provisions, and rules cited by parties. Conducts independent research for relevant cases, statutes, rules, and secondary sources not cited by parties. Researches legislative history and intent of particular statutes. Drafts conference memoranda and orders. Consults with other attorneys and professional staff regarding issues on review. Conducts special legal research and assignments when requested, including editing of work prepared by court externs.
