“California Supreme Court names Chair, Vice-Chair of the State Bar as part of continued governance reforms” [Updated]

January 22, 2018

As if the Supreme Court didn’t already have enough non-case-related things to do, the Legislature added another.

Used to be that the State Bar’s board of trustees chose its own leaders.  However, with the enactment of Senate Bill 36, the legislation that substantially restructured the Bar, the Supreme Court is now responsible for appointing the board’s chair and vice-chair.

According to the Bar, the court exercised its new authority by appointing Michael Colantuono and Jason Lee as chair and vice-chair.  Colantuono and Lee were elected president and vice-president by the board under the old system last July.

[January 24 update:  here is the Supreme Court’s order.]
