Veteran Daily Journal writer John Roemer in January started writing a weekly emailed newsletter billed as an “insider look at developments at the California Supreme Court, examining the cases before the Court, the dynamics among the justices, and the interplay between the high court, the lower courts, and the federal judiciary.”
The newsletter doesn’t appear to be available on the Daily Journal website, but you can sign up to receive it on Fridays here.
The in-depth newsletter, called the “Doghouse Report” after what Roemer says is “a longtime, tongue-in-cheek term used by Supreme Court staff to describe the file binder used to transmit Court of Appeal records to the high court,” has touched on a variety of topics.
The Doghouse Report started with “Swiping right on justice,” a look at how “[t]he high court has endorsed, refined and expanded the Unruh Civil Rights Act since the Legislature put it on the books in 1959.” Most recently, Roemer wrote about “The incredible shrinking Supreme Court,” focusing on “the high court’s low productivity.” Other editions include, “Bail reform faces another supreme test,” “Section 230 and the California Supreme Court,” “Leeper takes PAGA high,” “Water wars head to the high court,” and “California retools jury selection law to confront Batson/Wheeler legacy failures.”
