Tani Cantil-Sakauye, who retired as California’s Chief Justice three years ago, has joined the newly formed Alliance of Former Chief Justices, a part of the Keep Our Republic organization. Stating that “[j]udges . . . have only one constituent: the rule of law,” the Alliance’s founding statement says, “we publicly and proudly pledge our continued dedication to protecting both the blessings of liberty and the rule of law.”
Speaking about the Alliance on the Capitol Weekly podcast, Cantil-Sakauye said, “the judiciary is the least understood, the most mystifying, and now one of the most highly criticized branches of government and it’s unsustainable in a democracy.” “Now . . . more than ever we really need someone to speak to the fundamentals of the rule of law and the fundamentals of the courts,” she claimed, and said that former chief justices are “the best ambassadors” to do that.
