Supreme Court term in review

October 10, 2025

The Judicial Counsel Public Affairs office last week published its annual review of the most recently completed Supreme Court term (September 1, 2024 through August 31, 2025).

The review reports that, although the court heard arguments in 52 cases during the term, it issued only 45 opinions. The difference is that opinions were delayed in seven cases because of post-argument briefing. (Opinions are still outstanding in six of those seven.)

The review doesn’t mention that the 45 opinions might be lowest ever for the court. The apparent previous low of 49 was during the 2021–2022 term. (See here.) By contrast, between fiscal years 1999–2000 and 2008–2009, the court annually filed over 100 opinions, sometimes well over. (See page 9 of this Judicial Council report, which shows statistics for fiscal years rather than terms, but with comparable numbers.)

The review also includes these sections: The Court Returns to Sacramento, Boosting Bar Exam Oversight, Amendments to Court Policies and Rules, In Memoriam: Justice Joseph Grodin, High-Profile Cases, and Summary of Key Court Year Statistics.
