“California Supreme Court Approves Amendments to Rules Governing the Bar Exam and Attorney Conduct,” including requiring annual reaffirmance of attorney oath

September 25, 2025

Merrill Balassone’s California Courts news release outlines the “series of amendments to the California Rules of Court related to oversight of the California Bar Exam, attorney admissions, and rules addressing attorney civility” that the Supreme Court approved today. The text of the amendments, effective October 1, are here and here.

One of the revised rules requires attorneys to “declare adherence to the oath language . . . on an annual basis.” That language includes an oath to support the U.S. and California constitutions and to act with “dignity, courtesy and integrity.”
