“Chief Justice Guerrero emerges as frequent dissenter on state Supreme Court”

September 2, 2025

Craig Anderson reports in the Daily Journal on Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero’s dissents in four cases during the 2024-2025 term (see hereherehere, and here). (I’m quoted in the article.)

“Although the court still usually rules unanimously,” the article says, “Guerrero’s recent dissents stand out — not only because she has written more than any other justice in 2025, but also because of their unusually sharp critiques for a court known for its collegial tone.”

Some of the Chief Justice’s “critiques” (especially in the People v. Fletcher case) might have been “sharp[er]” than usual for the court in the last decade or so, but they register on the low end of the nationwide appellate harshness scale.
