Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye yesterday announced the appointment of Frank McGuire as the new (and 26th) Supreme Court Clerk/Administrator. McGuire will replace Frederick “Fritz” Ohlrich, who will retire at the end of this month.
McGuire has sterling credentials for the job, the court’s news release shows. He is currently the Managing Attorney for the First District Court of Appeal. After his graduation from Stanford Law School, he clerked for a Ninth Circuit judge and was then a research attorney for two Court of Appeal justices and one California Supreme Court justice. He was also a Court of Appeal writs attorney. But, for us, of course, the most impressive piece of McGuire’s resumé is that he’s a former private-practice appellate lawyer — he was Of Counsel to the Appellate Department of the Oakland law firm of Crosby, Heafey, Roach & May, P.C. (now Reed Smith).
