Justice Jenkins talks about the importance of being a gay, Black man on the Supreme Court

September 10, 2021

On a podcast with Out in the Bay, Justice Martin Jenkins elaborated on the moving comments he made when his Supreme Court appointment was announced almost a year ago.  Among other things, he also discussed how being gay and a Black man (“all day, every day”) does — and does not — impact how he evaluates cases as a judge.

At the time of his appointment, Justice Jenkins recognized the “significant responsibility that goes with being [the] first” openly gay Supreme Court justice and he said, “my identity has been, as a gay man, perhaps the greatest challenge of my life, and it has not been easy.”  But, he continued, “I am not here in spite of the struggle, I am here because of the struggle.”  He also advised, “living a life of authenticity is the greatest gift you can give yourself.”
