Appellate lawyer Charlie Bird dies [Updated]

June 21, 2021

This morning brought the painfully sad news that Charles Bird has died.

That his name is on over a dozen California Supreme Court opinions as counsel and that he authored a U.S. Supreme Court amicus brief that two former California Supreme Court justices signed, make it relevant to note his passing on this blog.  But it’s really just an excuse to pay tribute to an exceptional person.

Charlie was a dedicated and highly skilled lawyer.  He was compassionate, both personally and professionally.  He was a mensch.

His credentials and some of his accomplishments can be seen on the websites of the California Academy of Appellate Lawyers and the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, both of which he served as president, and on the website of Dentons, where he was a partner.

Charlie lived a full, honorable, and consequential life.  His friends, colleagues, and the law are all the better for it.

[June 23 update:  Today’s Daily Journal has an obituary of Charlie, written by Henrik Nisson and quoting this blog post.]
