In AsAmNews, juvenile justice advocates Patricia Soung (former Interim Executive Director and Youth Justice Policy Director at the Children’s Defense Fund-California, Executive Board Member of the Pacific Juvenile Defender Center, and a juvenile defense attorney), Shimica Gaskins (Executive Director of Children’s Defense Fund-California and former Acting Assistant Attorney General of the United States Department of Justice Office of Legal Policy), and Cyn Yamashiro (Director of the Los Angeles County Independent Juvenile Defender Program, Founding Director of the Center for Juvenile Law and Policy at Loyola Law School, and a former Los Angeles County Public Defender) write yet another op-ed in support of Governor Gavin Newsom appointing Justice Goodwin Liu as California’s next Attorney General.
Their endorsement concludes, “California’s children and families deserve an Attorney General with the mettle and mind to make California better for all who call our state home. Who will work to dismantle structures responsible for injustice and open the door to greater opportunities for all Californians.”
Among other things, the authors cite Justice Liu’s statements dissenting from the denial of review in a juvenile Miranda rights case (see here and here) and a juvenile delinquency matter (see here).
[Update: Samuel Nuñez, executive director of Fathers & Families of San Joaquin, writes in sanjoseinside — “Appoint Justice Liu as AG—The Future of California’s Children Depends On It.”]
