Justices praise their retiring colleague, Ming Chin, who sees a virtual future for the judiciary

July 28, 2020

Six Supreme Court justices took turns during June’s oral arguments to praise the seventh, Justice Ming Chin, who is retiring at the end of next month.  Because the court doesn’t hear arguments in July or August, the June calendar was Justice Chin’s last after 24 years on the high court bench.  The 30-minute remote tribute is available on video.

During his own remarks, Justice Chin discussed both the danger and the opportunity presented by “the pandemic and the civil strife.”  Among other things, he sees a chance to “improve the judicial system,” including by use of technology.  “The future of law and the future of the courts will be virtual and remote,” Chin said.

The Judicial Council last week also commended Justice Chin, the Council’s vice-chair.

Earlier this month, Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said the Governor would appoint Justice Chin’s replacement “in the next few months.”
