The Supreme Court finished its June calendar yesterday, the last oral arguments until the first week in September. The argument conditions were exceptional (see here), but no hearings in July and August is the norm.
With the hiatus, it’s an appropriate time to look at what’s in the opinion pipeline. Because of the 90-day rule, the regular Monday and Thursday filing days, and Justice Ming Chin’s impending August 31 retirement, here are the number of argued and undecided cases and the last day on which an opinion in each is expected to issue (with links to each oral argument calendar so you can see some case details):
April calendar: Seven opinions to be filed by July 6. (People v. Suarez, originally on April’s calendar, was continued and was argued yesterday.)
Early-May calendar: Five opinions to be filed by August 3.
Late-May calendar: Eight opinions to be filed by August 17.
June calendar: Ten opinions to be filed by August 31.
