“Chief justice of the California Supreme Court leaves the Republican Party, citing Kavanaugh”

December 13, 2018

Dan Morain reports for CALmatters that Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye has “quietly” changed her voter registration from Republican to no-party-preference because “she had become increasingly uncomfortable with the GOP’s direction nationally and in the state.”  The article recounts that the Chief Justice “said she made the final decision . . . after watching the U.S. Senate confirmation hearings of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.  ‘You can draw your own conclusions,’ she said.”

The article also notes Cantil-Sakauye’s clashes with the administration in Washington over immigration arrests at California’s courthouses.  (See, e.g., here, here, and here.)
