Ellis J. Horvitz, Founding Partner, Emeritus

Ellis Horvitz received his A.B. degree from the University of Chicago in 1947, his Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford in 1949 and his Juris Doctor from Stanford in 1951.  He was a member of the Stanford Law Review.

Upon graduation from law school, Ellis served as Research Attorney to California Supreme Court Justice Phil S. Gibson from 1951-1953.  Thereafter, he served as staff counsel and legal consultant to the United States Atomic Energy Commission.  He founded the firm in 1957, overseeing its development into the largest firm in the nation specializing exclusively in appellate litigation.

He has appeared in hundreds of appellate matters, many of which have helped shape the development of California civil law.  He has briefed more than 80 cases in the California Supreme Court and presented oral argument in more than 50.  His unique expertise and strategic thinking have enabled him to assist clients in selecting cases that present an opportunity to create favorable precedent, and then to present compelling arguments in those cases before the appellate courts.
