Horvitz & Levy attorneys David Ettinger, Beth Jay, and Christopher Hu have been awarded the California Lawyer of the Year Award (CLAY) for their work in Guardianship of Saul H. The Daily Journal's CLAY Awards are given to California-based attorneys for significant legal achievements in multiple areas of the law.
The superior court and Court of Appeal had denied to Horvitz & Levy's client—a 16-year-old who fled gang violence in his native El Salvador and traveled alone to the United States—the state court findings necessary for him to apply to the federal government for protection under the Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) status created by Congress. Horvitz & Levy successfully petitioned to have the California Supreme Court hear the case. (The court grants less than five percent of petitions for review in civil cases.) The firm then successfully briefed and argued the case in the Supreme Court, which reversed and ordered the superior court to make the necessary findings.
