In 2022, the California Supreme Court appointed Christopher Hu as pro bono amicus curie counsel in People ex rel. Garcia-Brower v. Kolla's Inc to brief and argue "in support of the Court of Appeal's holding that Labor Code section 1102.5, subdivision (b) does not protect an employee from retaliation for disclosing unlawful activity to a person or agency that already knows about the unlawful activity. " In its recent opinion, the court mentioned Christopher by name, thanking him "for his service as amicus curiae."
A pro bono appointment of this nature is rare, and occurs only when the court has granted review in a case where one side lacks counsel.
