Summer Associates Program
Horvitz
& Levy LLP's summer associate program introduces law students
to the practice of civil appellate law. Summer associates
assist the firm's attorneys in on-going cases by conducting
legal research and preparing legal memoranda, often in connection
with issues of first impression.
In addition, summer associates generally
have the chance to observe and participate in the oral argument
process by independently evaluating the strengths and weaknesses
of appeals, updating the case law cited in the briefs, participating
as judges in moot courts, and attending the arguments.
Summer associates may also assist in preparing
articles for publication,
developing materials for lecture and seminar
presentations, reviewing and analyzing legislative history,
and researching recent jury verdicts. Finally, opportunities
for involvement in pro
bono projects are often available.
The program affords law students an excellent
opportunity to develop lawyering skills. An attorney mentor
provides ongoing guidance throughout the summer. Other attorneys
supervise research and writing by summary associates and provide
substantive feedback when projects are completed. We also
conduct an end-of-summer review.
The firm typically hires three law students
every summer. Because of the nature of our appellate practice,
we focus on legal research, analysis and writing skills in
evaluating candidates for the summer associate program. (See
our hiring criteria
for attorneys generally.) The application process begins
with submission of a resume and writing sample of 5-10 pages
to the firm's summer associate coordinator. If an applicant's
credentials and writing skills appear to meet our hiring criteria,
we schedule an interview and request submission of a law school
transcript.
Resumes and writing samples submitted by
mail should be sent with a cover letter to the Summer Associate
Coordinator. Resumes and writing samples may also be submitted
by e-mail to the Summer
Associate Coordinator.
