Frederic D. Cohen
Partner

Frederic Cohen joined the firm in 1981 and became a partner in 1987. He is a California State Bar Certified Appellate Specialist, and is admitted to practice in California state courts, the majority of federal Circuit Courts, including the Ninth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Cohen was an Attorney with the Appellate Section of the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Division, where he represented federal agencies in actions raising constitutional and other challenges to a wide variety of federal actions. (See, e.g., AFLCIO v. Kahn, affirming the President’s authority to condition government contracts on compliance with wage and price guidelines.)

At Horvitz & Levy LLP, Mr. Cohen has brought his appellate expertise to bear on major appeals in both state and federal courts. Notably among the appellate matters on which he has recently worked, Mr. Cohen was lead counsel in Coppola v. Warner Bros., successfully obtaining through post-trial motions and appeal the reversal of an $80 million judgment against Warner Bros. Mr. Cohen also presented oral argument in the California Supreme Court on behalf of a group of universities and insurance carriers in Saelzler v. Advanced Group 400, a landmark landowner liability case in which the Supreme Court endorsed strict causation limits on liability. All told, Mr. Cohen has presented four arguments before the California Supreme Court, presenting close to 150 arguments before the state and federal appellate courts, and his name appears on over 60 published opinions.

Mr. Cohen has authored articles for the Southern California Law Review and Los Angeles Lawyer, and has co-authored Continuing Education of the Bar civil writ practice guides and written for Los Angeles Lawyer.

He received his Bachelor of Science from Harvey Mudd College and his Juris Doctor from the University of Southern California Law Center.
