Ellis J. Horvitz
Partner

Ellis Horvitz founded the firm in 1957. He is a California State Bar Certified Appellate Specialist and has appeared and presented oral argument in the California Supreme Court and Court of Appeal as lead counsel or amicus curiae more often than any attorney actively engaged in civil practice.

Prior to founding the firm, Mr. Horvitz served as Staff Counsel and Legal Consultant to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Earlier he served as Research Attorney to California Supreme Court Head Justice Phil S. Gibson. He taught appellate practice at the University of Southern California Law Center for more than 20 years. He is admitted to practice before California state courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Mr. Horvitz has appeared in hundreds of appellate matters, many of which helped shape the development of California civil law. He frequently presents arguments in the California Supreme Court and Court of Appeal and in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In addition, Mr. Horvitz has the authored or co-authored countless articles on appellate practice and general civil law spanning four decades.

Mr. Horvitz received his A.B. degree from the University of Chicago and his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees from Stanford. While at Stanford, he was a member of Stanford Law Review.
