| IN MEMORIAM PATRICIA
LOFTON Beloved Friend, Colleague, and Advocate
It is with sadness that we report the passing of Patricia Lofton on March 19 following a long-fought battle with breast cancer. Her courage and grace as she continued working with her usual dignity, optimism, and energy while fighting that battle were an inspiration to all who knew her. Patricia became a lawyer after a successful career as an opera singer, theater administrator, and music critic. Leaving behind her first career, she enrolled at Pepperdine University School of Law, graduated near the top of her class, and then worked as a law clerk for Ninth Circuit Judge Thomas Nelson before joining Horvitz & Levy in 1996 to specialize in appellate law after working briefly as a litigator. While at the firm she successfully handled a wide variety of appellate matters. She also became a fierce advocate of children’s rights, teaming up in pro bono cases with the Alliance for Children’s Rights and Public Counsel to win important appellate victories on behalf of disabled children and foster children in Los Angeles. Patricia will be missed for her tenacity as an appellate advocate, for the appreciation of music and art she shared with others, for the inner strength beneath her gracious demeanor, and for the love she showed to her fellow employees and their families. Both Horvitz & Levy and Patricia’s clients have been blessed to have known and worked with such a remarkable colleague, friend, and advocate. (Read more about Patricia’s life and career.) (In light of Patricia's love for the performing arts, she requested that any donations in her memory be made to the Gabriella Axelrad Education Foundation, which provides dance instruction to ethnically diverse, economically disadvantaged children in Los Angeles.)
